Section 1. Preparation before training
1. First, you must understand your dog's breed, personality traits, preferences, etc.. Nowadays, dogs can be said to be one of the most diverse species. Each dog has a different personality. For example, a Jack Russell terrier is energetic and barks all day. If you want to cuddle up on the sofa all day long, a bulldog is a better choice. A full understanding can provide more support for training.
2. Your dog is like a child, with a short attention span and gets bored easily. Therefore, training should be done several times a day, for 15-20 minutes at a time, to develop good training habits; dog training should run through every minute you spend with it, not just limited to a fixed training time every day. Because it is learning from you every moment it communicates with you.
3.The initial stage of dog training is boring. Sometimes we need to train over and over again. At this time, we must maintain a good attitude. You must know that dogs are our good partners. Hitting or scolding will not make you train effectively. , when training your dog, you must maintain a calm and rational attitude. Your uneasiness or anxiety will affect the training effect. Remember, the purpose of training a dog is to consolidate its good habits and punish bad habits; in fact, cultivating a well-trained dog requires a certain amount of determination and belief.
4. Before training, you need to prepare some props. Auxiliary training equipment is indispensable. A traction rope of about two meters coupled with a tactical dog collar or tactical dog harness is the entry-level equipment. Tactical dog collars should be of appropriate size and made of soft material. Before training, you must let your dog get used to wearing a tactical dog collar. In addition to being safe, wearing a tactical dog collar for your dog can match your movements to achieve training goals; if your dog is If you are particularly concerned about a certain thing, this thing may be the best "helper" in your training; you can also consult a pet trainer to see what kind of equipment is suitable for your dog. Puppies don't need too many things, but older dogs will need props such as tactical dog collars and leashes to focus their attention. Our common props include "tactical dog collars, leashes, tactical dog harnesses, reward food, traveling dog training balls, and dog training gloves."
5. When training your dog, you must pay attention to protection and avoid being scratched or bitten. Protection and safety are very important and must be kept in mind.
Section 2. Basic principles for training your dog
1. Training will not be smooth sailing. Don’t blame your dog. Its IQ is equivalent to that of a 3-year-old child. You should always encourage it, stay patient, get along better with the dog, and enhance its confidence and ability to learn. ;Be sure to control your emotions. If your emotions are relatively stable, the dog's emotions will also be stable; if your emotions are excited and the dog is afraid of you, it will become cautious and no longer trust you. As a result, it is difficult to learn new things.
2. Different breeds of dogs learn things at different speeds and in different ways, just like children. Different dogs have different temperaments. Some dogs are more stubborn and will fight against you everywhere; some dogs are very docile and try their best to please their owners, so different dogs need to adopt different learning methods.
3. The training process is boring. Repeating one action for a long time will make the dog lose interest. Improving the "training fun" is a sure-fire way to solve the boring training. In fact, the mentality of the dog is the same as that of children. Repeated Improper preaching will lead to a decrease in the dog’s “excitability” and inattention. In actual practice, the reaction is "the dog's head always looks away and does not respond promptly to the handler's instructions"; this signal tells you that it is no longer interested in you, and you should stop training immediately and activate the "classroom atmosphere" ".
At this time, I will tell you a very effective method. Find something that the dog likes and cannot chew (we often use a rope training ball). One end of the dog bites the ball, and you grab the rope with one end and start "strength". "Compete", believe me, your dog will like this little game very much, but you must pay attention to "win and lose", so that you can attract the dog's full attention at once, play for a while and train for a while, make clever use of the little game, and interact with the dog. Frequent interaction with your dog will not only make training more efficient, but the "intimacy" between you will also be stronger.
4. The rewards for your dog must be timely during training; dogs are very simple, and over a long time span, the cause and effect relationship will not be clear. If your dog obeys the command, you must praise or reward it within two seconds to consolidate the training results; once this time is exceeded, it will no longer be able to associate your reward with its previous performance.
Note: Rewards must be timely and accurate. Don't let your dog associate rewards with other wrong behaviors.
For example, if you are teaching your dog to "sit." It may indeed sit down, but it may have already stood up when you reward it. At this time, it will feel that you reward it because it is standing, not sitting down.
5. Dog training clickers are special sounders for dog training. Compared with rewards such as food or head touches, the sounds of dog training clickers are more timely and more suitable for dogs’ learning speed;
5.1 Every time the owner presses the dog training clicker, the dog needs to be given a substantial reward. Over time, the dog will naturally associate the sound with the reward. So any command you give to your dog can be used with a clicker.
5.2 Be sure to reward the dog in time after pressing the clicker. After a few times, you will be able to associate the sound with the reward, so that when the dog hears the sound of the clicker, he will understand that his behavior is correct.
5.3 When the dog makes the correct action, you press the clicker and then reward it. When the dog performs the same action next time, you can add the command and repeat the exercise. Use clickers to connect commands and actions.
For example, when your dog sits, press the clicker and then reward him. When he sits down again for the reward, guide him while saying "sit". Press the clicker again to encourage her. Over time, it will understand that if it sits when it hears "sit", it will be encouraged by the clicker.
Be sure to avoid external interference when training the dog; you must let the person who is with you participate in the dog's training.
For example, if you teach your dog not to jump on people and your child allows it to do so, all your training will be in vain.
6. Make sure the people your dog comes into contact with use the same commands you taught them. It doesn't know the difference between "sit" and "please sit down". Therefore, if you use these two words interchangeably, the dog may not understand it; if the passwords are inconsistent, the dog will not be able to accurately associate a certain behavior with a certain password, thus affecting the training results.
7. If the dog obeys the instructions correctly, it must be rewarded, but the reward should not be too large. A small amount of delicious and easy-to-chew food is enough; do not let it eat too easily or spend a long time chewing food, which will affect the training. Choose Foods that take a short time to chew. An eraser-sized piece of food at the tip of a pencil is enough to reward the dog without waiting for it to finish.
Rewards for your dog should be set based on the difficulty of the action. For more difficult or important instructions, the rewards can be increased appropriately. Pork liver slices, chicken breast chunks or turkey slices are all good choices. After the dog learns the command, the big reward of meat should be gradually reduced to facilitate subsequent training. But don’t forget to praise your dog.
Remember, do not feed your dog a few hours before training. Hunger will help increase its desire for food. The hungrier it is, the more focused it will be on completing the task.
8. Every training session must have a good ending, no matter how the dog’s training went. At the end of the training, choose some commands that it has mastered, and you can take the opportunity to praise and encourage it, so that it only remembers your love and praise every time; if your dog keeps barking and you want it to Stop making noise, just ignore it, wait until it calms down and then praise it. Sometimes the dog barks to get your attention, and sometimes barking is the dog's only way of expression.
Note: When your dog is barking, do not block its mouth with toys or balls. This will only make it think that it can get what it wants as long as it barks.
